Air Supply is celebrating 35 years of making music!!
Who could imagine that two young actors/singers, unknown to each other, performing Jesus Christ Superstar in May 1975, would eventually become Air Supply and still be performing together 35 years later! That is the story of Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, the two founding members of Air Supply. Various other members have come and gone with the group, but these two remain the staple. While in Australia they had their first #1 album release, coupled with the #1 song, “Love and Other Bruises,” but it just was not enough for these two, they wanted more. They had a huge desire to bring their music to the world, not just Australia. Fortunately for Air Supply, Rod Stewart invited them to open for his tour in both Australia and North America. This was just what they needed.
In 1980, Air Supply signed with Arista records and released their first album by the end of that year. Lost In Love was a major success in the United States selling over two million copies and producing such hits as, “Lost In Love,” “All Out of Love,” and “Every Woman in the World.” Over the next five years, they would release four more albums in the soft rock genre. The first two, The One that You Love and Now and Forever, still produced top 10 hits, but by the end of 1985, their popularity was shrinking, as was their audience. Their fourth album, Air Supply, was their first album not to go platinum, a sure sign their success was fading. “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “The One That You Love,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Making Love Out of Nothing At All” have each achieved multi-million plays on the radio and in 1986 their music was still being played endlessly on all radio stations.
In 2000, A Nice Pear, a new production company, was founded to be devoted to Air Supply’s entire future product. This now gave them complete creative control. Some 20 plus albums and 30 years later, Air Supply is still going strong. They are still touring and in January of this year, they returned from a sold out tour of Brazil. They have not been there in 14 years, yet they still managed to perform sold out shows.
They have 3 new members in the band, Amir Efrat on keyboards, CJ Burton on drums and Christian Nesmith on lead guitar. In 2010 they will be celebrating 35 years of making music together and their new album is still being mastered but should be out shortly!
How many times have you seen Air Supply in the past 35 years?? You won’t want to miss them this time around at Penn’s Peak!!
Tickets go on sale Saturday, January 23rd at 10:00 am at all Ticketmaster outlets and at the Penn’s Peak Ticket Office. Penn’s Peak ticket sales are walk-up only, no phone orders.
